    ACCENT YOUR SCOOTER
    WITH METAL CARVING
    Why not revive this art
    of antiquity as an
    appropriate custom
    bike expression?
    By Joe Ziegler
Do you realize the custom bike has
become the proving ground for every
art and craft form ever devised? As
the cat is the perfect photographic
subject with no bad angles, so the
custom scooter is the perfect vehicle
(no pun intended) for displaying any
    of man's expressions of creativity.
    From macrame to metal sculpture,
the beauty man devises improves the
look of the custom motorcycle be-
    cause the custom motorcycle en-
hances or improves it. Through the
various art forms interesting melds of
color, texture, and design add coun-
    terpoint to the overall object.
Until now metal carving, one of
man's oldest art forms, has been
largely ignored by the custom bike
crowd. The reason for this informal
boycott is probably that metal carving
is a comprehensive art form requiring
years of practice to become adept at
    its execution.

tool designs made by engravers, the
kind of stuff done in jewelry stores.
They separate their art form from all
    superficial hand or machine engraving
on the basis of appearance and kinds
of abilities necessary to do each.
    Whereas surface engraving is a
simple inscribing of lines to depict
shape and design, metal carving en-
graving is the actual shaping and
    forming of three-dimensional designs
    in bas-relief. While some engraving
    requires only outlining, carving re-
    quires shaping to depict form.
    Custom bikes and metal carving
    are naturally compatible, with the
carving serving the same art and op-
tical function as that carried by pin-
striping, except that carving is many
    times more complicated and intricate
both in application and function. That
function is to supply interest and eye
    appeal in open, plain-looking areas,
and to unite or hold together adjacent
    areas of mechanical complexity, to
give the object it is applied to (in this...
